Teens and their many slangs
The generational gap between adults and teenagers can make communication with them feel like they are speaking a foreign language or maybe an out-of-this-world language.
All through my journey and career working with teens, I have learned that the world of teen slang is an ever evolving language and, whether we like it or not, we have to roll with it as adults and as parents; if not it will lead to a wide communication barrier.
Understanding the language is more about fostering communication and bridging the gap, building bridges and make genuine connections.
If you want to meet your teen at their level and understand where they are coming from, then you must understand their lingo.
In my years working as a teen mentor, I’ve experienced teenagers switch from one slang to the other in a breath, and I’m sure every adult relates to this.
One minute, we’re discussing ‘sus’ (suspicious), and the next, they’re throwing around ‘rizz’ (charisma) like it’s second nature. And let’s not even get started on the ever-changing meanings of ‘slay.’
Over the years, I have learned that language is a living, breathing thing, especially for teens. And to connect with them, we need to be willing to learn their language.
Why does it matter?
Slang often reflects the current social and emotional climate of teenagers. It can reveal their anxieties, their joys, and their unique perspectives. By understanding their language, we gain valuable insights into their world and into their minds as well.
Learning teen slang isn’t about becoming ‘one of them.’ It’s about showing that you’re willing to understand and connect. In my recent release “Growing: A Memoir,” I shared stories of navigating the world of teen communication and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.
